The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Salute, by Baldassarre Longhena, is one of the most famous churches in Venice. It was built to give thanks for the liberation of Venice form a virulent plague that between 1630 and 1631 killed over 80,000 people. In order to build the new church, it was chosen to demolish the religious building of the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità (Church of the Holy Trinity) together with its school and convent, next to the Venice Customs Office,a.k.a.Punta da Màr.
